New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, was not quick to announce this decision promptly following his victory in November.

"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the need to focusing my complete efforts on enacting the platform on affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he is from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
