NY Launches Online Platform for Public to Share ICE Footage Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens
New York state AG has introduced a recent online portal urging locals to submit photos and videos of immigration raids throughout New York. This action follows a shortly after a major immigration operation shook NYC's Chinatown, prompting widespread demonstrations.
US Citizens Arrested During ICE Operation
A lawmaker announced during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and detained for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Rallies erupted in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Every New Yorker deserves to reside free from terror," the AG stated in a announcement.
"For those who saw and recorded ICE activity recently, I ask you to share that evidence with my office. We are committed to assessing these accounts and investigating any violations of law."
Portal Features
The platform includes spaces to upload visual evidence of the operation, as well as a field to note geographic details. When submitting, users must check a box that confirms that "authorities could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or government document."
Information about the Chinatown Raid
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say involved more than 50 ICE personnel, occurred in a well-known area of NYC where counterfeit purses, items, goods and additional items are regularly available widely – often to visitors.
Videos of the incident depict several covered and weaponized personnel zip-tying and detaining a individual, and forcing aside bystanders. Crowds of residents pursued the officers through the streets. An armored military vehicle was observed rolling through the city streets.
Leadership Statements
At a news conference held with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, said that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be taken for no reason." He clarified the persons were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This constitutes a military-style operation to incite tension. It is merely a pretext to provoke conflict for this administration to utilize the armed forces to stop conflict that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the immigration operation quickly spread – every mayoral candidates criticized the incident, as did NY's governor.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration selects oppressive displays that generate terror, rather than security. It needs to cease," a political candidate wrote.
New York City immigrant rights groups expressed outrage also.
"ICE targeted the neighborhood with tactical trucks, covered personnel and riot gear to go after local sellers trying to make a living. This action had nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and communities," said the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Agency Rules
Official guidelines bans the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has said it does not apprehend American nationals. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has discovered that over 170 US citizens have been held against their will by federal agents since the beginning of the current administration.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in New York and around the country this year.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations against federal operations are widespread including accusations of aggression and cruel conditions.
Recently, a submission submitted by advocacy organizations alleged inadequate care of pregnant women in detention centers.
