Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
