Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
