The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
