The people of Israel observe second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace talks proceed
Citizens have come together throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"The bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed formal memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate familiar with the discussions revealed that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.
The source said the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- A lasting truce
- The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for assistance deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the area
Civilian Reaction
In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose brother lived through the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages come back no one will have peace of mind."
"When we see everybody home once more, we can relax again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Activist one woman stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Research now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to end in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Situation
At the area of the music event, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side district, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"As the evening comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
Medical Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of several people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis said additional dead people had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, medical staff said.
